Three students modeling the latest in letter A walked down the center of Meadow Pond’s cafeteria—a runway lined with family members. All smiles, they posed for a moment, then circled the room. The applause didn’t stop … for all 26 letters!

The first-ever ABC Fashion Show, presented by Meadow Pond Elementary School’s kindergarten team, was an exuberant celebration of the young students’ alphabet exploration and reading readiness. MORE.

The sixth graders are gathered in pairs and trios around a half dozen vertical white boards, thinking about n. Math teacher Selina Hedigan wrote the equation 8n + 6 = 2(4n + 3) = 14n on the class white board and asked the students to determine if the algebraic statement was true or false.

Some groups talk for a moment, pick up their markers and start writing. Other groups seem stuck.

Hedigan opens a toolkit of tips that support the sixth graders in understanding and applying the foundations of algebra. MORE

What is the impact of fruiting trees on backyard bird populations? Are there waste streams that can be recycled through concrete that reduce the carbon emissions of the construction material’s manufacturing process? Can a standard eye exam be used to detect the neurodegeneration associated with multiple sclerosis?

These are just some of the questions being investigated by the 13 seniors in John Jay’s Science Research program, led by teachers Krista Munger and Dr. Lisa Papernik. The science educators offer students the structure and support to do college-level research. Along the way, students develop academic and professional skills, find career direction and even discover new information. MORE
